this list started when i thought "why don't i compile the 20 or so cool festivals i know about and send the list to friends?"  well, as you can see, the list grew, and grew, as i became obsessed.  i basically didn't want to miss out on anything myself, and now, you won't miss out either - well, at least you'll know they exist.

the criteria for this list is basically:  would i want to go to this?  (assuming i had the time and money).  most of these have great music, dance, and workshops.  some require your participation and creative expression, some you can just show up, kick back, and enjoy.  all are a chance for people to come together in celebration. 

as for me, i've been playing music and dancing for many years.  my current focus is on community-based participatory music and dance, which i will be doing at some of these festivals.  i facilitate improv singing circles for kids (through my "instant choir" program) and grown-ups (through my Vocal Voyagers circles).  i also organize (and teach) contact improv dance (youtube it to check it out).  i perform music at various places, trying to invoke some magic in the moment, with a combination of songs and improvisation.  and i dj for free-form community dance events.
i would love to do all of this wherever YOU live, so give me a holler.  i'm based in central california, but always game for a travelling adventure!  always affordable and accessible.
